Homelessness in Ottawa

Homelessness is a serious problem in Ottawa, and so often overlooked or even ignored. But as hard as it is to think about, more than 7,000 people stayed in Ottawa shelters in 2017. Almost a thousand were women.

Women become homeless for a number of reasons. They might be struggling with a mental health challenge that forces them to stay in hospital, losing income. They may be unable to afford rent – indeed, a one-bedroom apartment in Ottawa costs nearly $11,000 a year, but a single woman receiving Ontario Disability Support receives just over $12,000. They may have fled abuse at home. Or, they might be new immigrants to Canada, with no network or support system to rely on.

It’s a problem that isn’t going away. In Ottawa, there’s been an increase in the number of individuals using shelters. We see more seniors living on the street, unable to afford retirement residences and with no family nearby to support them. And affordable housing – like what we offer here at Cornerstone – is harder and harder for many people to find.
